Sharing

Who can reach a list, and what they can do with it once they can.

A list belongs to whoever made it. Sharing it is one decision, made in one dialog, and changing it later replaces what was there rather than adding to it.

Three ways to share

Alongside that is one switch: whether the people it reaches can edit it, or only read and print it. A read-only share is the right one for a list somebody is shopping from rather than adding to.

Only the owner can rename a list, share it, or delete it. Sharing a list does not hand over the list.

Groups

A group is a shortcut for sharing and nothing else: Flat, Parents, Weekend crew. Share a list with a group and everybody in it reaches the list; add somebody to the group later and they reach it too.

It never becomes a second hierarchy. A group has no lists of its own, no settings, and no meaning beyond who is in it, which is why a group page shows you the lists it reaches rather than making you go and check each one.

A public page

A list can be published as a read-only page at a stable link, for somebody with no account at all: a cleaner, a neighbour, whoever is doing the shop.

  • One list at a time. A visitor cannot ask for another one and cannot discover that another one exists.
  • Read-only. Ticking needs an account.
  • Revocable. Unpublish it and the link stops working.
  • You choose whether quantities and dates appear, and whether contributors are named. Names are off by default, because a public page is about what needs buying rather than about who lives there.

Who did what

Every item says who added it, and every tick says who ticked it. When a change came through an access token the row says so too — Anna · via Kitchen tablet — because a token is somebody's access narrowed, never an identity of its own.
